See the future in spatial philosophy

Huang Xiangming, the director and chief architect of TIANHUA Group, first expressed his gratitude to the guests present, noting that despite the challenges faced by the industry, the enthusiasm of practitioners for communication demonstrated the confidence of the industry.

He briefly introduced Tianhua: Over the past 30 years of development, along with the urbanization process in China, its scale has now stabilized at 2,500 to 3,000 people. Its business is centered on architectural design and covers areas such as planning and landscape. The project types include residential, commercial, industrial, cultural, etc. Especially in the renewal of the style plots in Shanghai, it has many practices.

At the same time, he put forward his thoughts on the future of the industry: Experience will be more important than material things, and design needs to focus on the value at the non-material level. The project needs to highlight uniqueness and diversity, breaking the stereotype of "all cities looking the same". Communities should move towards complexity, integrating life and services. The reuse and sustainability of existing space will also be a core issue.

Spatial dialogue of field perception

Alex, Senior Vice President and Global Partner of CCD Shanghai, shared his insights on "Spatial Dialogue of Field Perception".

He first briefly introduced CCD as a leading brand in the Chinese design field, having been deeply engaged for 31 years. Its business covers high-end real estate, hotels, private residences, etc., and it possesses full-process design service capabilities and a material technology platform.

In the core sharing, he proposed that design should break through the physical boundaries of space and focus on perception and emotional value: high-end space design should not be confined to the present but should present "the next stage of lifestyle" to users. It is necessary to integrate cultural immersion with artistic aesthetics, and create Spaces that resonate emotionally through a sense of ceremony, refinement (such as implicit intelligence), and local cultural elements. Taking No. 1 Courtyard and a certain villa project in Shanghai as examples, this article shares how to upgrade the space from "practicality" to "experience" through material selection (such as red copper, blue-gray wall panels) and interior decoration of the exterior, endowing each project with a unique soul.

Li Jie, the founder and chief architect of Chengzhi Design, shared his insights centered on the "Spatial Narrative of High-End Residences".

He first introduced Chengzhi Design: having been deeply engaged for 12 years, it has successfully implemented commercial complexes such as Longfor Tiandi Street and high-end residences in many places, and has also explored the integration of modern wooden structure buildings with residential areas.

In his sharing, he positioned himself as a "street designer capable of solving problems", and through four cases - Chengdu China Merchants · Jishi Program, and Wuhan GDI · Da Sheng Le Fu - he expounded on the design logic of high-end residences: integrating local cultures (such as the western Sichuan residential area and the Wuhan book spirit) to create an interaction between public Spaces and living scenarios. Emphasize the creation of above-ground and underground three-dimensional Spaces, integrating the artistic conception and ecological sense of gardens. Taking into account both the practicality and emotional value of the floor plan, and flexibly adjusting the design according to the needs, the ultimate goal is to create a living space for users that combines local characteristics with a futuristic feel.

Boundaryless – how space is a continuous condition

Justin Bridgland, the founding partner and design host of MDO, shared the design concept around "Boundaryless - how space is a continuous condition".

He introduced that MDO is a design firm founded in Shanghai in 2014, with business covering architecture, interior design, soft furnishings, etc. In the core sharing, he took several projects as examples: the Hangzhou project shaped the architectural form by leveraging the fluidity of the river; The Zoland Boutique Resort in Mount Emei, with "seclusion and relaxation" at its core, integrates the entire design process from planning to architecture, and uses natural materials to blend the space into the environment. Two restaurants in Jing 'an District, Shanghai, have respectively created vibrant social and private dining scenarios. Middle Eastern private vacation villas, divided into functional areas and endowed with unique stories and styles for each space.

He has always emphasized breaking the boundaries between indoor and outdoor Spaces, focusing on the connection between space and nature, while meeting users' diverse emotional needs such as socializing and relaxation, allowing the space to evoke emotional resonance.

06

The physical and mental boundaries of space

This dialogue on the "physical and spiritual boundaries of space" opens up a new understanding of the value of space. The two are not separated but rather interpenetrate and coexist. To break through, one needs to transcend the boundaries and limitations, allowing physical space to support emotional needs. In the future, the boundaries of space may be defined or updated, but the core will always be to serve people and evoke spiritual resonance through design.

Huang Xiangming, the director and chief architect of TIANHUA Group, stated that he has observed two trends in current spatial design that break boundaries: one is to expand outward, superimposing complex details, diverse materials and lighting effects to enrich the spatial layers; Second, it is to dig inward, strip away additional elements, and return to the spatial essence of modernist architecture. He personally prefers the latter, believing that design should integrate regional culture and humanistic background. There is no need to judge the superiority or inferiority of the two trends. Due to the different attributes of the project and the needs of the target audience, diverse explorations are all reasonable. The ultimate goal is to break boundaries and achieve integration.

Li Yan, the general Manager of Product Innovation and Design Management at Shui On Land, focused on "human-oriented needs", pointing out that design should break through the boundaries within the red line and pay attention to urban public Spaces. Since its development, Ruxin Tiandi has continuously invested in the renovation of the surrounding streets. Although the ownership of the public Spaces is not owned by enterprises, it has collaborated with the government to create an open and shared urban interface. Taking the 468-square-meter unit in the sixth phase of Cuihu as an example, it is based on the long-term in-depth understanding of the demands of high-end customers. In the future, it will also focus on community renewal and practice the concept of coexistence between people, space and the city.

Bu Yu, the executive vice president of the Design and R&D Center of Dahua Group, frankly admitted that real estate design needs to balance costs, projects and customer demands, jokingly saying that the industry is like a "world of martial arts", and it needs to be explored within the constraints of reality. He pointed out that residential space design has been continuously advancing, from north-south ventilation, large halls to 270-degree panoramic cabins, constantly breaking through physical boundaries. It is emphasized that an open and innovative environment should be provided for designers. Through micro-updates and micro-innovations, new materials and scenarios should be introduced, and combined with local culture and customer needs, products that are "good-looking, practical and easy to manufacture" should be created.

Liu Gang, senior partner of goa Design, chief architect and president of the Shanghai office, interprets spatial design within the framework of "Dao Fa Shu" : "Shu" refers to the means of controlling materials, light, water, etc. to create experiences; "Method" refers to effective methodologies such as multi-disciplinary collaboration. For instance, the Renhe Hai Shang Yuan project produced a masterpiece through cross-disciplinary cooperation led by architects. The "way" is to precisely match the needs of the customer group. He believes that new technologies can break through the limitations of physical space, such as virtual technology creating multi-dimensional experiences. The core is to always focus on people's needs and combine traditional wisdom with modern technology.

Ke Le, the manager of the Technology Management Department of Poly Development Shanghai Company, defines space as "a medium for fulfilling spiritual needs", believing that design should first clarify the scene goal, such as sacred, warm or relaxing, and then create the space through multiple dimensions such as scale, materials, colors, lighting and even scents (such as the fragrance in the sales office). Emphasizing the "breakthrough from design to experience" should be customer-centered. Design is merely a means of realization; ultimately, the actual needs of customers should be met through spatial scenarios to make the experience come to life.

Light design

Xu Dongliang, the founder and chief designer of TORYO International Lighting Design Center, shared his views centered on "Lighting design".

With 25 years of experience in lighting design, he believes that light is not only a tool for illuminating buildings but also a medium for conveying emotions and breaking through spatial boundaries. He illustrated with multiple cases: for instance, the Anaya Church uses single-lamp diffuse reflection to create a sense of transparency that "leaks light and sound", and a certain building in Shenzhen uses pixel lighting to make the facade interact with the city's "breathing", and also creates a lighting installation with 10,000 baby bottles to convey the warmth of "caring for the future".

He emphasized that lighting design should respect the essence of space and avoid excessive decoration. Through the combination of light angles, colors and materials, life and texture can be endowed to buildings. Ultimately, light and shadow can infuse the space with a soul and illuminate humanity's yearning for an ideal space.

From a luxurious mansion to an ideal life

Chen Xi, assistant general manager and deputy chief architect of PTA Shanghai Baitao, shared his views on the theme of "From Luxury Homes to Ideal Lives".

Taking a certain project in Guangzhou as an example, he proposed that an ideal life is not a "decorated luxury house", but a return to the essence of living. The project covers an area of 190 square meters and is planned as a three-bedroom layout in a restrained manner. It draws on the nine-square grid theory and the "first suppress then rise" approach in gardens to create a flowing and boundless space - the entrance hall compresses the line of sight, and the column-free design at the corners integrates the living room, dining room and outdoor landscape. Focusing on the "golden four corners" (living room, dining room, master bedroom, and master bathroom), they are endowed with the greatest landscape value, such as a 5.5-meter column-free bay window in the master bedroom and a viewing bathtub in the master bathroom, allowing residents to enjoy the mountains while lying in bed and listen to the flowing water in the bathtub.

He believes that an ideal life should balance practicality and a sense of ceremony, and use spatial design to connect nature and humanity, ultimately achieving the living artistic conception of "standing in the mountains, leading the way forward with the heart".

09

Design is the boundary, not the surface

Mike, the head of JAMES TU INTERIORS in China, shared the core viewpoint that "design is the boundary, not the surface."

The team he is in has been deeply engaged in design for 36 years and has executed projects of the top ten luxury residences in Asia and many private residences in various places. The core sharing focuses on the post-pandemic space design trends: It points out that the above-ground space is restricted by regulations, and the basement has become a new battlefield for design. The renovation logic is expounded through multiple cases: removing partition walls and adding skylights to solve the problems of lighting and ventilation; Combine the sunken garden with the mezzanine to extend the light to the garage. Even the basement was transformed into a 188-square-meter theater-like space to create a dramatic experience.

He emphasized that design should first address emotional value and spatial perception rather than being confined by style. By activating underground space, it can achieve a value transformation from "ancillary storage" to "core functional area", allowing the space to break through its inherent boundaries and meet the diverse needs of the owner for living scenarios.

Spatial dialogue of field perception

Yan Shuo, the design director of HYP-ARCH Consultants, shared his practical perspectives on the theme of "Space has boundaries, Philosophy knows no Bounds".

He believes that spatial boundaries are a collection of multiple cognitions and need to balance the demands of developers, users and urban managers. The design logic is expounded through multiple projects: The Sanya project connects the garden space with small-scale entrances, eliminating the internal competition in the scale of the gate. The Guangzhou Pazhou South project connects the city's main roads with connecting Bridges, creating a relaxed community. The project in Gusu District, Suzhou, simulates the traditional eave Angle and conveys the ink-wash painting atmosphere with sandstone materials. The Hangzhou project, with a pure elevated floor design and in combination with the landscape of Wuchang Wetland, creates a "slow life" community to meet the supporting needs of nearly 2,000 people.

He emphasized that design should not be confined to surface styles. It is necessary to explore local culture, balance norms and experiences, and through functional integration and scene creation, enable space to break through physical and spiritual boundaries and carry healthy and diverse life values.

The complexity and contradictions of landscapes in large and complex projects

Chen Jiaqi, the director of Guangmu Landscape Design, shared practical experience on "The complexity and Contradictions of Landscapes in Large and Complex Projects".

Taking the "Great Street" project in Jiaxingli Community and the "Imaginative Block" project in Xingyao Central as examples, he pointed out that landscape design needs to break through the perception of "merely beautifying". In Jiaxingli Community, by coordinating road closures to transform into pedestrian Spaces, the community's functions have been extended to the streets. By integrating with rivers, neighborhood social scenes have been created, and even the Spaces have been used in advance by non-residents who have not yet moved in. Starlight Central integrates scattered commercial plots, incorporates elements of the second dimension and art installations, attracts diverse groups of people to take photos, and achieves the fusion of park-like and commercial features.

He emphasized that complex projects need to balance the styles of multiple teams, project schedules and functional requirements. The core is to make the landscape a bond that connects the space, restore the sense of life of the street, and make the landscape not only decorative but also carry social and emotional values.

The new technological boundaries of the relationship between humans and space

This dialogue on "reconstructing the relationship between humans and space" illuminates the future direction. Stock renewal, technological breakthroughs, and cross-border collaboration are becoming trends. The connection between people and space is no longer limited to the physical. We should take the user as the core, adhere to the ethical bottom line, balance innovation and humanity, and make the space a carrier of coexistence between people and The Times.

Fu Ning, director of the commercial product R&D department of Jinmao Hotels, from the perspective of an operator, focused on the pain points of existing properties. He pointed out that the old buildings of enterprises like Jinmao (such as Jinmao Tower in Lujiazui) are out of touch with the current needs of users and urban trends. The planning of CBD once overly emphasized office functions and lacked a sense of life, causing people to flee. Emphasizing that in the era of existing stock, it is necessary to conduct in-depth research on user needs, break down the competitive barriers among buildings, and enhance the overall value of the region through collaborative efforts rather than merely competing for customers. This is the key direction for future urban renewal.

Zheng Mofan, vice president of Huayang International Design Group, believes that the AI era is subverting the traditional understanding of physical space boundaries: traditional architecture focuses on perceivable physical Spaces, while AI gives rise to Spaces at the conscious level, breaking the boundaries under Newton's physical laws. Physical space is relatively eternal, but in the AI era, spatial perception is more timely. It is suggested that practitioners embrace new technologies, break boundaries through technology, drive the transformation of architecture itself, and adapt to human needs to resist the laws of physics and expand spatial imagination.

You Junhui, senior partner and design director of Shangen Design, pointed out based on the practice of the fourth-generation house that the concept boundary of the fourth-generation house has been continuously expanding, extending from the traditional large terrace to the "big chassis" model in Hangzhou. It is proposed that the boundary should be transformed from an "unbreakable barrier" to a "connection interface", which can link natural and life scenarios with spiritual needs. In the future, with the support of technology, boundaries will be able to carry more imagination, such as exploring broader possibilities of spatial connections and breaking the clear-cut domain limitations of the past.

Tian Xin, the founder of MoA Dayin Creation, approaches from the perspectives of lighting and philosophy, proposing that light is the core medium for perceiving time and space, and the dynamic attribute of "lighting" reflects the correlation between time and space. It is believed that space is defined by human perspective and there is no absolutely objective physical space. Reflect on the boundaries of designers: It is necessary to balance the productization of space (such as the contextualization of model rooms) with the real needs of users. At the ethical level, it is essential to clearly define the degree of participation, avoid excessive addition of elements, and focus on the core scale and functional requirements of users.

The One Atelier

Yang Yunhui, The general manager and partner of The One Atelier in China, took the cross-border collaboration between Italian design and luxury brands as the entry point, pointing out that fashion luxury brands like Armani have broken through industry boundaries and ventured into real estate fields such as hotels and residences. The entry of non-real estate players has become a new trend. It is believed that this is an important barometer in the context of the polarization of the real estate industry. In the future, more brands will integrate lifestyle into real estate. At the same time, it is emphasized that cross-border collaboration should be based on solid design and creation, and the core creation of the space should be done well first.
